What are you doing this weekend? Your answer should be tasting kraut beer at Sauerkraut Weekend in Phelps, NY, July 31 – August 2, 2015. Crafty Ales and Lagers, a local brewery in the kraut capital of the world, felt the kraut weekend needed something out of the ordinary.
To create this beer, Crafty Ales and Lagers is making beer in a style called Gose, a German sour ale brewed with salt. The salt here is the brine of the fermented cabbage, not the cabbage itself. The brand, for those kraut connoisseurs who must know, is Silver Floss, a name that has a long history in Phelps. Some malted rye and caraway seeds along with the kraut brine puts a “Reuben” spin on it.
If can’t make it to the festival, an alternative is the opposite: beer flavored kraut. Saverne brand flavored kraut makes Craft Beer Kraut to add to brats, sandwiches, and more.
